The Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) on July 09, 2026, issued direction regarding harmonization of classification of industrial sectors based on Pollution Index Waste Battery Collection Centres.
The communication refers to earlier letters through which directions issued by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and notifications of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) were circulated for harmonizing the classification of industrial sectors into Red, Orange, Green, White, and Blue categories. These classifications replaced earlier categorization systems, and additional left-out sectors were subsequently classified by the State Pollution Control Board.
Further, CPCB had issued directions on December 16, 2025, regarding the classification of charcoal manufacturing units, which were also circulated for implementation.
Now, CPCB, through its letter dated June 11, 2026, has issued fresh directions under the Water Act, 1974 and the Air Act, 1981, classifying Waste Battery Collection Centres under the Green category. The communication forwards these directions for adoption and implementation at the state level.
